Say It With Heart

 

Say It With Heart program is part of the 5th grade curriculum.  Students will discuss self-esteem, how to handle peer pressure, assertiveness and other social skills that will assist them in making healthy and wise choices.  

 

Wonders on Wheels (WOW)

 

WOW  is an out of school enrichment program for elementary school children. It is designed to enhance Virginia’s Standards of Learning (SOLs) and promote good conduct.    This program is sponsored by the Junior Leaque of Richmond.

 

Science Connection

 

Fifth grade attends Science Connections at the Virginia Science Museum once a week for ten weeks for a total of 10 hours. Instruction is done by the science specialist. It is a multidisciplinary, hands-on, fun science enrichment program for fifth grade students. Students are engaged in activities that incorporate art, literature, and mathematics as well as observation, modeling, and experimentation. The activities are correlated with the Virginia Standards of Learning. This program is funded by the school’s partners in business. www.smv.org

 

Fire & Safety

 

Fire Safety Education Program (FSEP) is provided to the fifth grade an hour a week for five weeks that emphasizes fire safety.  The 1st week consists of an explanation of the program, the awards ceremony, fire chemistry, different classes of fires, a demonstration on how to use a fire extinguisher.  The 2nd week consists of a classroom lesson where the students are tasked with finding home hazards.  The 3rd week consists of the importance of a home fire escape plan. Students learn about smoke detectors, stay low and crawl, feel the door, and to meet at on outside meeting place. The 4th week consists of learning about first aid, stop-drop-roll, and types of burns. The 5th week is the awards ceremony. Culminating activity is a banquet for the winner of an essay. The winner receives a trophy and $100 savings bond for their hard work and dedication towards fire safety.
