Welcome to the fifth grade, a year of leadership, responsibility, cooperation, dependability, and fun!

Norrell’s 5th grade program for the 2005-06 school year will have a challenging curriculum that will help each student to maximize their potential.  We have an outstanding, hardworking and very dedicated grade level staff.

It is the mission of our teachers to have a classroom environment that is safe for our students to express themselves both academically and emotionally. We will set high standards and encourage our students to take responsibility for their learning. Our students will be encouraged to use creative problem solving approaches in all aspects of their learning and daily lives.  It is our hope that the students will leave our classrooms with the foundation needed to achieve any goal that they set for themselves. Most of all, we hope that each of our students has a dynamite fifth grade experience!

5th graders keep busy at Norrell.  They have opportunities to join drill team, dance troupe, band, choir or orchestra; become safety patrols, morning announcers, peer mediators; and other activities.  During the year we study World Regions in social science.  In science we study life processes, living systems, oceans, matter, light, sound, scientific method, earth science, and microscopes using hands-on experimentation.  In math we learn about geometry, probability, ratios, graphing, and fractions.  While all students will work toward identical outcomes, the pace and depth of instruction will vary based on students' needs.  We do a lot of reading and writing.

We expect the students to have 50 to 60 minutes of homework every night.  There are always spelling words to memorize, vocabulary words to learn, and books to read while at home.  It is important to prepare our fifth graders for the tougher world of middle school!

Each month, 5th graders are allowed to participate in reward activities if:

  1. The student's behavior for the month meets criteria of the classroom teacher's discipline plan and the school wide discipline plan.
  2. All student work is up-to-date;
  3. The student receives no behavior referrals; and
  4. The student is never removed from class.

At the end of the year the 5th graders have a final reward activity...going to Math & Science day at Kings Dominion!  All students demonstrating safe and responsible behaviors throughout the school year will be allowed to attend.  Professional judgment of the school staff (principal, teachers, specialists, playground supervisors, etc.) will contribute to this decision.
